History:
Sivaganga is the town and regional capital of Sivaganga in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is located at a distance of 48 km (30 mi) from Madurai and 449 km (279 mi) from the provincial capital Chennai. The kingdom of Sivaganga was founded by Sasivarna Periya Oodaya Thevar in 1730. The village was later ruled by his successors and eventually Velu Nachiyar under the leadership of Maruthu Pandiyar. They were opposed to the British Empire, but finally lost it in 1790.
